When it comes to the world of science fiction and robots, you can't talk about it without mentioning the Transformers. These iconic shape-shifting machines have been a favourite among fans since the 1980’s, but none quite stand out like the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime. This guy doesn't just transform from a truck into a robot - he transforms from a symbol of hope and justice into a one-man army, ready to take on any foe in the name of protecting the innocent. Fast forward to today, and you can now build your own LEGO Optimus Prime with LEGO set 10302. That's right, the Optimus Prime LEGO set is now available and it's a must-have for any Transformers or LEGO fan. This set is no joke, with over 1500 pieces and standing at over 32 cm tall when built. It's amazing how something so small as LEGO bricks can transform into a mighty warrior like Optimus Prime. So, whether you're looking for a new challenge or just want to relive some childhood memories, the Transformers LEGO sets are definitely worth checking out.
Set Details
Similar to its iconic predecessor, this Optimus Prime LEGO® Icons model (10302) effortlessly transforms between a mighty robot and a powerful truck. Builders can marvel at the impressive 19 articulation points in robot mode and unlock the chest chamber to keep the Autobot Matrix of Leadership secure. The robot mode can be enhanced with the included jetpack, equipping the Autobot with the iconic ion blaster and Energon axe. Additional authentic accessories comprise of an Energon cube and optional waist panel. In truck mode, staying true to the G1 style, Optimus Prime does not come with his trailer, but the semi-trailer is impressively faithful. The design captures the essence with its large windows, drum-lacquered silver grills, and distinctively blocky appearance. The LEGO construction enhances the blocky aesthetic, making it even more remarkable. The impressive instruction manual has an introduction to Optimus Prime, and a short bio of Senior Designer Joe Kyde.
Is this set a good investment? Autobots, let’s transform and roll out to find out!

A solid looking LEGO Icons set but one with very little in the way of direct comparators make this a hard set to get a handle on from investment perspective.
If this is a set that interests you it is definitely worth seeking out the best prices as it seems to be a regularly discounted set. Currently, we would recommend heading to Zavvi where there is a £60 discount down to £99.99.

Theme Analysis
As regular readers will know we are big fans of the Icons theme, relying on solid historical annualised growth of 13%.
Some good examples within the wider theme include LEGO Icons Palace Cinema (10232) which has gained nearly 150% since retired at the end of 2017 (annualised growth 18%) and LEGO Icons Mini Cooper Mk VII (10242) which has gained 130% since retired in 2015 (annualised growth 11%).

Comparable Set Analysis
The Licensed sub-theme within Icons is a relatively new one with no track history of retired sets as yet and there being no direct comparators for LEGO Optimus Prime. For us we would prefer to look at sets from the established successful sub-themes such as the modular buildings or fairground but that’s not to say this won’t be a successful set.

Conclusion
A strong theme leads us to sway towards this to be an investment for us countered by the lack of track history in the sub-theme which would lead us to pass. That said, the large discounts currently available on this set make buying now at around the £100 mark a decent option, albeit it with some risk still attached.
