Investment Potential

Is this the next blockbuster LEGO Star Wars set? We think it well might be. A popular set with high demand, rarely discounted and the value strongly underpinned by 5 LEGO minifigures (especially the 3 uniques; Chancellor Palpatine, Clone Trooper Commander Fox and Padme Amidale) which alone account value at $70, half the sets RRP. Slated to retire at the end of this year this is definitely a set to take a closer look at.

The set can be bought at either LEGO.com or Amazon.

Theme Analysis

LEGO Star Wars, in it’s 25th year, is approaching 1000 sets and on average delivering annualised growth of 12% across that large sample size. It really is that good! Some examples we have looked at include LEGO Star Wars X-wing Fighter (7191) which has seen more than $1,000 growth since retiring in 2002 with an RRP of just $150 and LEGO Tantative IV which has seen nearly 150% growth since retiring in 2011.

10198 Tantive IV 31/12/2011 $150 $386 157% 8%

75256 Kylo Ren's Shuttle 31/12/2021 $130 $178 37% 12%

Comparable Set Analysis

The picture gets even better when looking at the LEGO Star Wars Clone Wars sub-theme, which has delivered average annualised growth of 15%. Some of our favourites from the sub-theme include LEGO Star Wars Republic Attack Cruiser (8039) which has had nearly 500% growth since retiring in 2011 and LEGO Star Wars Republic Attack Gunship (7676) which has very similar performance since retiring a year earlier. Both sets were $120 RRP and are now valued at over $700!

7676 Republic Attack Gunship 30/06/2010 $120 $731 509% 14%
7964 Republic Frigate 31/12/2012 $120 $595 396% 15%
8039 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser 31/12/2011 $120 $688 473% 15%
8098 Clone Turbo Tank 31/07/2012 $120 $460 283% 12%

Conclusion

A great theme, an even better sub theme and an amazing looking LEGO Star Wars Gunship. Strong demand, rarely discounted and expected to retire this year. The value is strongly underpinned by the amazing LEGO minifigures too. We feel this is a must buy LEGO investment for 2024.
