Theme Analysis

Just to emphasise the LEGO Harry Potter theme is very strong. We looked at a couple of sets within the main theme. The three sets featured in the table above have seen impressive returns due to their popularity and rarity - the LEGO Diagon Alley set has increased its value by 136%, the LEGO Hogwarts Castle set has increased 121%, and the LEGO Motorised Hogwarts Express has grown 781%. These returns are particularly impressive when you consider the annualised growth, ranging from 8-13%.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
10132 Motorised Hogwarts Express 31/12/2005 $120 $787 556% 10%
10217 Diagon Alley 31/12/2012 $150 $517 245% 11%
4842 Hogwarts Castle 31/12/2012 $130 $315 142% 8%

Comparable Set Analysis

When looking at comparable sets we wanted to use a different strategy and while we wanted to highlight another blockbuster investment in LEGO 5378 Hogwarts Castle that was released in December 2007 and has since seen an incredible return rate of 646%, with an annualised growth rate of 14%. We also wanted to share some recently retired Harry Potter Sets that haven’t performed so well, we have Set 75966 LEGO Hogwarts Room of Requirement was released in December 2021 and currently is showing no growth though this is likely to increase in years to come. The Return on Investment (ROI) for Set 75967 Forbidden Forest: Umbridge's Encounter has been poor also with a return rate of only -4% and an annualised growth rate of -2%. Despite this, investing in these sets can be profitable over the long term, as they are likely to increase in value due to their rarity. Additionally, these sets can be enjoyed for many years, as they provide an opportunity to recreate some of the iconic scenes from the Harry Potter movies.

Set Number Set Name Retired Date RRP Current Value Total Growth Annualised Growth
5378 Hogwarts Castle 31/12/2007 $90 $660 633% 13%
75966 Hogwarts Room of Requirement 31/12/2021 $20 $24 20% 7%
75967 Forbidden Forest: Umbridge's Encounter 31/12/2021 $30 $37 23% 8%

Conclusion

We do feel it is important to show that not all LEGO Investments are a great addition to your portfolios and this article shows some of the weaker recently retired sets. We have projected 5 year value of LEGO 12 Grimmauld Place to increase by 26%, with an annual growth of 8% though. The good news is though even the theme and sub-theme growth are estimated at 9% and 7% respectively, making it a very steadily increasing investment. As such, LEGO 12 Grimmauld Place is an excellent option to consider but maybe one not to get carried away with particularly if you are looking for short term profits. This is an Invest.
